Preparing an Apartment for a Power Outage

Ask management about emergency lighting, stair access, building alerts, and elevator failures. Keep a flashlight by the exit.

Make it practical

Do not use a fuel generator on a balcony or inside. Plan an accessible powered destination if heat, cold, or medical equipment makes staying unsafe. Keep a manageable amount of water distributed safely.

Ask management before an outage

  • How will residents receive building notices if internet and elevators fail?
  • Are stairs and exits accessible, lit, and unobstructed? Who can provide assistance within an agreed support plan?
  • Which essential building systems have backup power, and for how long? Do not assume the whole building is backed up.

Organize a small-space kit

Store supplies without blocking corridors or exits. Divide water into containers you can lift, rather than choosing one very heavy jug. Keep a flashlight accessible from bed and a charged phone bank in a known location. A safe alternate destination may be more useful than an oversized battery station. Avoid improvised indoor cooking and unsafe extension-cord arrangements.

Put this into your household plan
