Prepare a carrier or leash, food, water, waste supplies, identification, veterinary records, and a current photo.
Make it practical
Practice loading carriers and identify a destination that accepts your animals. Assign a backup helper. Never assume a public shelter accepts every pet; service-animal access is a separate consideration.
Pack for your actual animal
- Familiar food, separate water, bowls, routine medication information, and veterinary contact details.
- Carrier or secure leash, identification, a current photo, and copies of vaccination records.
- Waste supplies and familiar bedding or a comfort item that is practical to carry.
Practice the handoff
Let a trusted backup helper know where the carrier and supplies are kept. Practice loading the animal calmly before an emergency. Identify pet-friendly accommodation and confirm policies before relying on a destination. Large animals require a separate early transport plan. Do not put yourself in danger returning to a building or closed area for an animal; tell responders what happened.
